(Moment reads Steps, Walking + Running Distance and Active Calories from Apple HealthKit data.)** Monitor your Today Steps, Distance and Calories* Apple would prefer I continue to pay for 2TB of iCloud storage.Moment - Easy and Smart Dashboard for iPhone and Apple Watch makes your life easy, smart and focused on your health. But sparse image trickery aside, there’s no way to do it and still leverage all the features of iCloud Photos & the Photos app integration between OSX and iOS. I’d prefer to store the master image library on the Synology itself and just use referenced masters.

That’s also the main gotcha in this setup I require a Mac that has enough local disk space for original media.

It’s the “download originals” on my MacBook Pro that matters since that’s where Hazel is pulling from. I have no reason to carry around a 300gb library on my phone or iPad.

When you snap a pic it’s still uploaded to iCloud in full res. Space management on iOS devices is handled by the “Optimize iPhone Storage” setting on the iOS app (iPhones and iPads). Deletions anywhere are reflected everywhere, so deletion for me means I want it gone, period. I don’t delete photos on my iPhone to save space because I’m using Photos and iCloud Photo Library.

New images in Photos would end up on the DS, but a subsequent delete in Photos would be ignored and the image would remain on the DS. I could change the Hazel rule to ignore deletions.

It's taken a bit of tinkering, but it's working well for me to accomplish my goal of having a "non-Apple-dependent backup" of all my photos in one unified library while still leveraging iCloud Photos and local DSLR photos for my day-to-day needs. With my unified photo masters collection extracted on the DS218+, I do what I want in terms of backing up to other cloud providers, USB, etc. This workflow also supports photos coming in via DSLR or other cameras, which is necessary for me. DS does it's thing and puts it in Moments. That change kicks off Hazel, which copies the folder/file(s) from MASTER over to the DS218+. My MBP at home sees this (within seconds if awake, within 15-30 minutes when on Power Nap), and downloads the masters to Photos. So now, i snap a pic with my iPhone and it gets pushed up to iCloud Photos, as always. Note that Hazel *does not* sync changes from the DS218+ back to /MASTERS, which is exactly how I want it to behave since updating back would likely screw up the Photos.app. They're automatically indexed & added to Moments on the DS218+. It's monitoring the /MASTERS folders on the MBP and pushes detected changes, including deletes, over to the DS218+. Photos.app is doing some sort of locking that interferes with Drive. But Drive couldn't mirror deletes on the DS if I removed a photo (and cleared deleted items) in Photos.app.

It worked well for new photos - Drive would see the change in Photos and push it over to the DS. Moments is set up to do Shared Libraries, so it sees activity in there.įor "sync" software, first I tried just Drive w/ one-way upload. I'm uploading into /photos on DS218+, where I created an "/Apple Library" subfolder and then mirror /MASTERS within that.

Then, you need to use some software to monitor & copy those files to your DS. DO NOT monkey around with files in here manually via Finder. AFAIK, this only works if you have "download originals to this Mac" is enabled so there are actual files to sync. That allows some third party products to "see" that folder. First trick, create a favorite shortcut to /MASTERS in the Finder pane. You can see this if you do a "show package contents" in OSX. Original master photos in Photos.app live in the /MASTERS folder within the app package. It's not a 'sync' it's just a one-way mirror and I don't see Photos edits on Moments (which isn't what I want anyway). I've got a ~300GB Photos.app library, managed by Photos.app on my MacbookPro successfully mirroring masters to a DS218+ and Moments.
